Can TMJ Cause Ear Pain?

What is TMJ?
The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is the joint on each side of the head that connects the jaw to the skull. It is located just below the ears.
These joints work like sliding hinges, allowing your jaw to move side to side, up and down, and back and forth. They help you chew, talk, yawn, and perform other everyday actions.
However, overuse, injury, or certain medical conditions can cause problems with your TMJ, leading to TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). This can result in inflammation, pain, and swelling, seriously affecting your daily life.
Considering how often these joints are used, it’s no surprise that TMD can cause significant discomfort.
What are the Symptoms of Ear Pain from TMJ?
The maxillofacial area, which includes the TMJs, is a highly complex and interconnected system.
Think about all the ways you move your jaw and mouth and the variety of facial expressions you can make. These actions are possible because of the intricate network of muscles, joints, and tissues in this region.
Because of this complexity, TMJ disorders (TMD) can cause pain and other issues throughout the face. Since your ears are less than half an inch away from your TMJs, ear pain is a common symptom of TMD.
This pain can feel like a constant, dull ache or a sharp, intense sensation. It might sometimes get worse when you move your jaw. Moreover, inflammation and swelling from TMD can spread to the ear, causing discomfort.
Additionally, overworking the muscles connected to the TMJ can lead to ear pain, tension headaches, and even pain behind the eyes.
Treating the TMJ disorder itself can often help relieve ear pain and other symptoms. If your ear pain is caused by TMD, treatments that focus only on the ear or assume an ear infection may not work. Addressing the root cause—your TMJ—is important to find relief.
Why Does TMJ Cause Ear Pain?
As already touched upon, the TMJ acts like a hinge, allowing your jaw to open and close. It is less than an inch away from your ear and its delicate inner system. Because of this close connection, TMJ issues can directly affect your ears, leading to pain and discomfort.
Here are some other causes of ear pain related to TMJ:
- Inflammation and Swelling
When the TMJ becomes inflamed due to overuse, injury, or pressure, the swelling can spread to nearby areas, including the inner ear. This can cause mild to severe ear pain, especially during a TMJ flare-up. - Tinnitus
Tinnitus, often linked to hearing loss, causes ringing or buzzing sounds that only you can hear. While it doesn’t cause pain, it can be frustrating and distracting. Research suggests that TMJ-related inflammation may damage the tiny hair cells in the cochlea (part of the inner ear), leading to tinnitus, often at a younger age in people with TMJ. - Clogging Sensations
TMJ-related swelling and inflammation can create pressure in the inner ear, making it feel clogged or like it needs to pop. This sensation, similar to what you might feel during altitude changes or allergies, can muffle sounds and cause dull pressure in the ears.By addressing TMJ issues, you can often relieve these ear-related symptoms.
